Projekta Norise
At the end of 2017, you funded 3 BioSand Filters for those in need. Soon, approximately 340 people living in Cambodia will have access to clean and safe drinking water.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Country: Cambodia
Region: Battambang, Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Tbong Khmum, and Kampot
Implementing Partner: Clear Cambodia
Number of Total Projects: 913
Estimate of Total People Served: 150,000
Status: In Progress
Estimated Completion: Fall 2019
Water is prevalent across Cambodia but it's often not safe to drink. In
rural Cambodia, where nearly 80% of the population lives, sources are
often ponds and rivers polluted by human waste and microbes, or red
groundwater with high concentrations of iron. Wells that do exist are in
poor condition. Thanks to your support, we're changing that.
Clear Cambodia operates the largest BioSand Filter (BSF) program in the
world, a contextually appropriate technology for regions where water is
available but not clear. BSFs remove suspended solids and 99% of
bacteria and protozoa as water filters through layers of gravel, sand, and
a biological layer on top. Extremely effective, BSFs are also easy to
construct, use, and maintain. Clear Cambodia provides trainings and
support for households to build their own BSFs, and all families and
schools receiving a filter also receive hygiene and sanitation education.
We're thrilled to share that construction is underway, the community engagement phase has begun, and everything is on track.
In the months since your first update, our local partner has been hard at work:
- Conducting 254 health and sanitation trainings in schools and communities
- Conducting 342 hygiene and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) trainings
- Ensuring household participation, buy-in, and labor toward project construction receive a water point, comprised of 3 men and 3 women
- Conducting BSF education, construction, and installation workshops
- Supporting the construction of 9,781 household BSFs out of a projected total of 21,600
We're halfway through and there's still work to do. But importantly, Clear Cambodia doesn't anticipate any project delays for the remaining 451 projects to be completed on time.
We know 21 months is a long time, but we don't consider a project complete until all the pieces are in place
for each community to maintain their new water point. Thank you for your patience as our team collected
information for this Progress Report. We look forward to sharing your Completion Report next fall!
Since 2006, charity: water supporters have funded clean water projects for more than 8.4 million people around the world. 100% of your generosity makes an impact, and we'd love to partner with you again in the future to continue transforming lives. Thank you for your support.
